A politically motivated protest was recently staged at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for an investigation into The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle MON, over his past tenure as Governor of Zamfara State. While such actions may appear to support transparency, it has become clear that the demonstration was orchestrated by political elements seeking to destabilize ongoing national security efforts for personal political gain.
Credible intelligence suggests that these protestors are being used by individuals who are threatened by the progress being recorded under the leadership of Dr. Matawalle. These actors, with their eyes on 2027 political ambitions, are attempting to weaponize state institutions to derail the focus and integrity of a patriotic public servant devoted to restoring peace and security across the nation.
Since his appointment, H.E. Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle MON has shown steadfast commitment to addressing insecurity, terrorism, and banditry. While isolated incidents of attacks persist, there has been significant progress, and advanced counterterrorism measures are actively underway. Strategic successes are being recorded in key regions, offering hope to millions of Nigerians who had lived under fear and uncertainty.
At the heart of this targeted distraction is an effort to undermine the credibility of the Honourable Minister at a time when the country needs his undivided attention. These political moves are not only irresponsible—they put the lives of Nigerians at risk.
Let it be clearly stated: we are not opposed to investigations or lawful inquiries. If there are legitimate concerns about Dr. Matawalle’s previous public office, they should be addressed through the proper legal processes and institutions. It must also be emphasized that prior to his appointment, all relevant security and anti-graft agencies conducted background checks and cleared him of any wrongdoing. His nomination and confirmation were based on these formal assessments.
Raising objections now—at a time when the Minister is playing a critical role in national defense—serves no one but those who prioritize politics over the safety and unity of Nigeria.
Furthermore, Dr. Matawalle has never declared an interest in contesting for the 2027 Zamfara governorship. His sole focus remains on fulfilling the mandate entrusted to him by the President, driven by his love for Nigeria and commitment to national peace and stability.
The nation must not allow political actors to exploit our security apparatus for selfish gain. The safety of Nigerians must be preserved above all else. Political maturity demands that we support, not sabotage, those who are actively working for the good of the country.
