The Edo State Police Command says it has directed investigation following the death of former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin.
According to a statement from the union through its acting Chairman, Comrade Joman Bernard, Comrade Eboigbodin died after an argument with police officers on Monday in Benin City.
The statement disclosed that during the argument with operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, Comrade Eboigbodin slumped and died on the way to the hospital.
Bernard noted that, “the operatives might not have directly caused his death, but after aggravating the cause of his untimely death, they ran away and left him struggling for his life. He later gave up on the way to the hospital after his wife managed to get help to move him.
“This incident which occurred on Sokponba Road between Gorreti and Welfare Junction, happened in broad daylight at about 9am was not supposed to have been the end of Comrade Eboigbodin if those policemen were proactive and more concerned about the citizenry they were meant to protect,” he maintained.
The Edo State Police Command reacting to the calls for justice, said it has directed investigation into the incident.
In a statement, the Command’s Spokesman, Moses Yamu disclosed that the police received the news of Comrade Eboigbodin’s death allegedly due to police unprofessional conduct with concern.
The Command also highlighted the cordial relationship the police enjoyed with the NLC, Civil Society Organisations and the public.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Umoru P. Ozigi, psc, mnip wishes to use this medium to commiserate with the widow, family, friends and associates of the deceased over the loss and prays for the repose of his soul.”
“He further noted the cordial working relationship existing between the Police, Civil Society Organizations, NLC and all critical stakeholders in the state and has therefore, directed the immediate investigation into the incident.
“The Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice prevails in every situation,” the police statement read in part.
