McEnies Global Communications has attained fresh and patriotic initiative to deepen Nigeria’s climate-health response through the Weather and Climate Information Services for Resilience Health Project.

The initiative, known as WISER Health, is being led by the UK Met Office in partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Rockefeller Foundation.

The project is designed to improve the quality and accessibility of weather and climate forecasts for Nigeria’s health sector, enabling authorities to respond more effectively to climate-related health threats.

Officials said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s third Nationally Determined Contribution, which seeks to establish an integrated climate, health and environmental early warning system in at least 18 states by 2030.

As part of the programme, McEnies is working closely with key government agencies including the Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria and the National Emergency Management Agency to advance a national framework for climate-resilient health systems driven by reliable data.

Chief Executive Officer of McEnies Global Communications, Dr Omolaraeni Olaosebikan, said the organisation was focused on making meteorological information more useful for health-sector decision-makers.

She explained that through community surveys conducted in several states and collaboration with stakeholders, the company is developing strategies that prioritise vulnerable populations across rural, urban and coastal communities.

Dr Olaosebikan noted that McEnies has also been facilitating cross-sector workshops and community engagements to ensure that early warning services are inclusive and tailored to local realities.

According to her, the effort complements the broader national collaboration on early warning systems for health currently being driven under the WISER framework.

“Climate information holds untapped potential to transform health outcomes,” she said.

“Our work with WISER Health is about making this data truly usable for health agencies, ensuring timely, equitable and locally relevant responses to emerging challenges.”

She added that the project draws support from global partners including the World Bank and the World Health Organization.

Experts warn that climate change is increasing health risks such as heat stress and the spread of vector-borne diseases, making reliable climate information critical for effective public health planning.

McEnies had earlier partnered with the UK Met Office and the FCDO in 2023 to develop strategic communication protocols aimed at mitigating flooding risks in vulnerable communities across Nigeria.

The company said the success of that intervention strengthened coordination among disaster management agencies and improved public awareness on climate risks.

Building on those gains, McEnies said it is now expanding its work to integrate climate information into health planning as Nigeria grapples with emerging environmental and public health challenges.
