Muhammed Babangida, son of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, has declined his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, less than a week after the Federal Government unveiled a fresh list of board appointments for key parastatals.

In a letter dated July 21, 2025, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Babangida expressed deep appreciation for being considered for the role, which he described as “a true privilege,” but said he was unable to accept the offer due to personal and professional considerations.

“After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided, with utmost respect, to decline the appointment,” the letter read. “This decision was not made lightly. It stems from a convergence of personal and professional considerations which, at this time, would not allow me to serve with the level of focus and commitment the position rightly demands.”

Babangida, who has previously kept a low political profile despite his influential background, reaffirmed his support for the Tinubu administration, stating he remains “fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership.”

He also pledged to offer his expertise in other ways, adding, “I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways where my expertise may be of service.”

The decision comes amid mixed reactions to the recently announced appointments across various federal agencies, which drew attention both for political balancing and the calibre of persons selected.

There has been no official response from the Presidency as of press time.
