After years of frustration, failed suspensions, traffic congestion and unsafe driving conditions, residents and commuters in Festac Town, Amuwo-Odofin, may finally be heading for relief as plans have been concluded for the rehabilitation of the 2nd Avenue and 7th Avenue road network.
The roads, which serve as key ring routes within Festac, have remained in a deplorable state for years despite repeated appeals by residents, motorists and community leaders. The proposed rehabilitation was confirmed during a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by the Executive Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, Prince Lanre Sanusi, on January 13, 2026.
The meeting brought together major stakeholders, including government officials and community representatives, to deliberate on the long-awaited overhaul of the roads.
In attendance were the Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Gbenga Oyerinde; Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Constituency I, Hon. Foluke Osafile; President of the Festac Town Residents Association, Barrister Adegunle; representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Works, and other key stakeholders.
Representing the Lagos State Governor, the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, disclosed that both the 2nd Avenue and 7th Avenue projects will be constructed concurrently within an 18-month timeframe.
He explained that the intervention would go beyond temporary repairs, stressing that the roads would undergo full rehabilitation to ensure durability and improved traffic flow. Engr. Daramola appealed to residents and road users to cooperate with contractors and exercise patience during the construction period, noting that temporary discomfort and traffic disruptions would be unavoidable.
He added that the rehabilitation is essential to address years of neglect and to support safer and more efficient movement within Festac Town and the wider Amuwo-Odofin axis. Residents of the area have largely welcomed the development, describing it as long overdue, while also bracing for the challenges that construction activities may bring.
Many expressed hope that the project would finally put an end to the persistent hardship associated with navigating the two major roads. The rehabilitation of 2nd Avenue and 7th Avenue is expected to significantly improve mobility, reduce vehicle damage, boost economic activity and enhance the overall quality of life for residents and commuters in Festac Town once completed.
