Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has praised Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as a distinguished statesman committed to the unity and integrity of the nation.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Friday Atiku celebrated Gowon’s 90th birthday, commending his leadership during Nigeria’s most challenging times, including the Nigerian Civil War.
Atiku described General Gowon as a refined and uncontroversial public figure.
He noted his lasting contributions to the country’s development, particularly through the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Also, he reflected on how the NYSC has fostered national integration, encouraged intermarriages, and broken down ethnic and cultural barriers.
Additionally, Atiku acknowledged Gowon’s pivotal role in the creation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has contributed to socioeconomic and political integration in the West African sub-region.
Speaking further, Atiku praised Gowon’s humility, modesty, and integrity, stating that these virtues have earned him widespread respect both in Nigeria and internationally.
Atiku expressed gratitude for his service to the nation and his enduring legacy as a symbol of unity and statesmanship.
