The Government of Canada has outlined six essential conditions that foreign nationals, including Nigerians, must meet to qualify for a visitor visa, officially known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). A central requirement is that applicants must convince immigration officers of their intention to leave Canada at the end of their authorised stay.
According to Canada’s immigration guidelines, applicants must:
- Hold a valid travel document – such as a passport.
- Be in good health – and undergo a medical examination if required.
- Have no criminal record or immigration-related convictions – that could render them inadmissible.
- Demonstrate strong ties to their home country – such as employment, property ownership, financial assets, or close family connections.
- Satisfy immigration officers of their intent to leave Canada – once their authorised period of stay expires.
- Show proof of sufficient financial resources – to cover expenses during their stay, with the required amount varying depending on the length of visit and accommodation arrangements.
In some cases, applicants may also be asked to provide a letter of invitation from a host in Canada.
The TRV permits eligible foreign nationals to enter Canada for tourism, family visits, or other short-term stays, subject to immigration approval.
