The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has condemned what it described as unethical practices by some tertiary institutions, including the delay or refusal to refund students whose tuition fees had already been paid before the disbursement of student loans.
In a public notice issued on Monday, 29 June, 2026, NELFUND also raised concerns over arbitrary increases in tuition and other institutional charges by some higher institutions.
The agency said such practices run contrary to the objectives of the Student Loan Scheme introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
“The Student Loan Schem e was established to remove financial barriers to higher education, not to create additional burdens for Nigerian students,” the statement said.
NELFUND disclosed that it is already engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive due refunds and that institutional charges remain fair, transparent and consistent with the objectives of the scheme.
NELFUND reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of students and preserving the integrity of the student loan initiative.
