Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship aspirant, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has dismissed suggestions that Nigeria’s challenges can be resolved within a single presidential term.

His remarks come ahead of the 2027 general elections, as some aspirants pledge to fix the nation’s problems in just one tenure.

Speaking during an interview on TVC on Thursday, Showunmi who is also the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), a platform aimed at fostering grassroots consensus for the selection of future leaders described such promises as deceptive.

“Anyone who says one term is enough to tackle all the challenges bedevilling us as a nation is either a liar or a fraud,” he said.

Showunmi pointed to the example of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who completed the tenure of Umaru Yar’Adua before serving his own term from 2011 to 2015.

He argued that Jonathan’s attempt to secure a second term exposed the difficulty of sustaining continuity, ultimately destabilizing one of Nigeria’s major political parties.

“They boast about how easy it is to do a very difficult job, but they won’t tell you how. Jonathan’s case showed us that even completing two terms was contentious, and the fallout destroyed a major party that has yet to recover,” he added.
