Dangote Refinery: A Monument to Nigeria’s Untapped Possibility, By Segun Showunmi

Alhaji Aliko Dangote,

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you not just on behalf of Nigeria, but for the entire African continent.

To witness what you have built at the Dangote Refinery is to confront, in the most tangible way, the scale of what is possible. The vision, the precision, the discipline behind every detail the engineering, the functionality, the sheer ambition stand as undeniable proof that there is absolutely nothing stopping Nigeria except our own limits of imagination and execution.

As I walked through that complex, many thoughts crossed my mind. Chief among them was this: we are not inferior to anyone on this planet. That facility could have been anything a massive water transfer scheme, a power grid, a space program, a military-industrial complex, or a world-class medical research hub. The discipline and clarity of purpose that created this refinery demonstrate that a serious, focused government can achieve even more if it applies private-sector rigor to national problem-solving.

When I saw the power infrastructure, I asked if it could power Lagos. I was told it could power all five South-West states. When I saw the water treatment and desalination systems, I asked if it could supply Lagos with water. The answer was clear: with the right investment, it is entirely possible after all, that is what Dubai did. In that moment, I knew such a vision could be replicated in Ogun State, should I be given the opportunity to serve.

I was equally struck by the depth of environmental consideration. The extent to which the ecosystem has been protected in the design is not just impressive it is exemplary.

I left that tour prouder to be Nigerian, and more convinced than ever that with focused, disciplined leadership, the future we imagine is not only possible it is within reach.

I almost did not attend the tour with the Oxford Saïd Business School students, thinking I already understood the scale of what had been achieved. I was wrong. Being there has strengthened my belief in our capacity, simply because you proved it can be done.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, may Almighty Allah reward you.
May the Dangote Refinery continue to flourish.
And may it inspire those in positions of authority today and tomorrow that indeed, yes, we can.
