2027: Duty, Not Ambition. Why Ogun Must Choose Intention Over Impulse, By Segun Showunmi

As conversations about the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State gradually gather momentum, it is important that we pause and ask a simple but profound question: What exactly should Ogun people desire in their next governor?

Elections, particularly in a state as strategic and dynamic as Ogun, should never be reduced to a marketplace of ambitions. Leadership is not a trophy to be won; it is a responsibility to be carried. The future of millions cannot be mortgaged to satisfy personal dreams, family expectations, or the restless urgings of political opportunism.

Yet, as we observe the early stirrings of the race, it is clear that different motivations are already at play.

Some are driven purely by ambition, the understandable but often dangerous desire to occupy power. For others, the push is fueled by family expectations, a continuation of lineage or influence. There are also those who, despite obvious limitations in preparation, competence, or understanding of the complexity of governance, are determined to force themselves into the conversation.

But Ogun State cannot afford an experiment in 2027.

Ogun sits at the crossroads of Nigeria’s economic and demographic transformation. Our proximity to Lagos, our industrial potential, our agricultural heritage, and the intellectual strength of our people place upon us a responsibility to get leadership right every single time. The next governor must therefore be someone whose motivations go beyond the personal.

For me, the aspiration to lead Ogun State is not about ambition. It is about duty.

Duty to a people whose resilience deserves purposeful leadership.
Duty to a state whose potential is still greater than what has been realized.
Duty to a future that must be planned with intention, not improvised through political chance.

Among those who may present themselves for the office, I humbly submit that my approach is the most intentional about our collective future. Leadership, to me, is not a seasonal performance activated by election cycles. It is a continuous engagement with ideas, people, and possibilities. It requires preparation, fairness of mind, and a deep understanding that governance is ultimately about service.

I believe I represent the fairest option for Ogun people because my commitment is to the whole state not to factions, not to political clans, and not to narrow interests. Our diversity is our strength, and the next governor must be someone capable of holding together the aspirations of every community, every generation, and every sector.

The real question before Ogun people is therefore not who wants to be governor, but who is most prepared to carry the responsibility of shaping the state’s future.

The coming years will demand strategic thinking about industrial expansion, youth employment, education, security, and infrastructure. They will demand leadership that understands both the urgency of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.

Ogun deserves a governor who sees beyond personal ambition and understands that public office is a solemn trust.

For me, this journey is not about the thrill of contest. It is about answering a call to serve.

When ambition drives leadership, the focus is often on the occupant of the office. But when duty drives leadership, the focus is always on the people.

In 2027, Ogun must choose duty.

And I stand ready to serve.
