The Paramount Ruler of Bangha Kingdom in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Suanu Baridam, has narrowly escaped death after gunmen opened fire on his convoy.

The first-class traditional ruler was attacked while returning from an engagement in the Okwale community, within Khana, on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. along the Tekar Sogho Road, linking the area to the East–West Road.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants ambushed the monarch’s vehicle between Taabaa Junction and Sogho, attempting to force it to stop.

When the driver refused to halt, the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the vehicle.

The monarch sustained a gunshot injury to his leg, while his driver was also wounded during the attack.

Both were rushed to the hospital for medical attention, with the traditional ruler currently receiving treatment.

Police Launch Probe

Confirming the incident in a press statement on Monday, the Rivers State Police Command said unknown gunmen emerged from the bush and attacked the monarch’s black Prado Jeep, shattering the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.

Police described the victim as King T. Y. Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, and confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh.

Although the motive for the attack remains unclear, sources said there were strong indications that the assailants intended to assassinate the traditional ruler.

This is the second time King Baridam has survived an assassination attempt.

The police said patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and track down the attackers.

“The Rivers State Police Command has commenced investigation into the incident and will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The Command also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in their investigation.

The attack has heightened concerns over the safety of traditional rulers and the rising spate of violent attacks in parts of Rivers State.
