The chairman of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye has tipped the Super Eagles to reach the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Honourable Elegbeleye made the prediction during an exclusive interview with Sports247 in Fes, Morocco, where the NPFL boss is physically present to support the Eagles at AFCON 2025.
He acknowledged that the three-time champions booked an early ticket into the round of 16 by winning their first two group games and pointed out that it is a true reflection of Nigeria’s giant status in the continent.
Elegbeleye declared with glee, “This is what Nigerians expect. We want to see our team playing to win, not praying to win.
“We are not praying for the downfall of another team so that we can move on, but we just want to win our games.
“We are happy that we are winning and, after two matches, we are already in the group of 16. This is what Nigerians expect from the Super Eagles.
“This is the kind of thing that we want to see from our national team, and I say kudos to the boys. They’ve shone capacity and resilience.”
Elegbeleye declared further that the current squad has brought back memories of how Nigeria got to the final of AFCON 2023 in Cote d’Ivoire and, though he stopped short of giving them victory on January 18th, the vocal sports administrator enthused that they will go far.
He added, “They’ve proven that Nigeria is indeed the giant of Africa, and I see them going far in this competition.
“I want to see them play in the final. We played the final at the last AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, and I see no reason why we cannot be there again this time around. It’s the final or nothing.”
