Tony Uranta Foundation is set to hold first Memorial Lecture in honour of late Niger Delta environmental and human rights activist, Prince Tony Ipriye Uranta.
The lecture, themed Unity in Diversity; building a national identity beyond ethno religious fault lines will hold by 9 a.m on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Kofo Abayomi street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Checks by Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com) revealed that the event was put together and organised by Tony Uranta Foundation comprising family, friends, associates and former schoolmates of the late activist who died at the age of 67 on November 24, 2021, at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Those who will be speaking at the auspicious occasion are distinguished Nigerians with indelible achievements; they include Prof Pat Utomi founder of Centre for value in leadership, Dr Umar Ado researcher and author, Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi educationist and public affairs analyst, Dr Shina Fagbenro-Byron lawyer and 2019 Presidential candidate KOWA party, Sir George Utomi lawyer and entrepreneur, Dr. Kola Adesina Sahara Group GMD-a leading international energy and infrastructure conglomerate.
Others are Senator Shehu Sani activist and politician, Annkio Briggs environmental and human rights activist, and Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo former lawmaker and Nigerian Ambassador.
The memorial lecture programme spans many areas of specialisation and will offer recognition to high achievers during their career. The lectures will also reflect TIU’s charitable objectives, defence for the underdogs, standing for truth despite the risks associated with it, as well as love and patriotism not just for the oil rich Niger Delta but Nigeria as a whole.
The Memorial lecture will equally help to shape the future of Nigerian society through the delivery of practical solutions for public benefits and for the greater good of Nigeria.
Uranta, an Ijaw Prince from Opobo community in Rivers State was the former United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy (UNDEDSS) Executive Secretary. He was also the Executive Secretary of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF). Uranta also served as the convener of Justice, Equity, Peace & Unity Initiative Nigeria (JEPUIN).
Uranta was at the forefront of the battle against pollution of the oil rich region by the exploration and crude oil exploitation activities of multi-national companies. His memory is cherished by many who knew him and those who were touched by his indelible contributions to humanity.
His legacy as a human rights activist and his commitment to the Niger Delta community are remembered with pride and respect. The Ijaw activist is being greatly missed by his jewel, Baarong Tony-Uranta, a staff of Channels Television and his daughter Amy Uranta.
