The 81 Division Nigerian Army has clarified reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen shot and killed a civilian within the Ojo Military Cantonment.
According to the Division, the unfortunate incident did not occur inside the military premises, but near the Mammy Market abattoir gate, outside the cantonment.
In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the Division confirmed that the shooting, which occurred on 18 October 2025, was suspected to be cult-related.
The victim, identified as Rilwan Adekunle, was rushed by an Army standby team to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, the nearest medical facility – but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased,” the statement read.
The Army further appealed to the public and media to verify reports with relevant authorities before dissemination to avoid the spread of misinformation. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and maintaining peace and security within and around the Ojo area.
