Nigerian Juju music has lost one of its brightest stars, as Ahuja Bello, the celebrated singer, guitarist, and bandleader, passed on peacefully in the early hours of today — just a day after marking his 83rd birthday.

Born Ismaila Dele Bello on August 24, 1942, in Iseyin, Oyo State, Ahuja Bello lit up Nigeria’s music scene from the 1970s with his electrifying performances and timeless compositions.

From his humble beginnings as an electronic technician, he went on to form Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles Band in 1976, a group that quickly became a household name with their infectious rhythms and joyful stage presence.

His daughter, Bello Festus Aderemi, celebrated her father’s life in a heartfelt Facebook post, writing, “Rest in peace my lovely dad, Alhaji Ahuja Bello. We love you but God loves you more.”

His bandmates also paid glowing tribute, “Though you are gone, your light continues to shine in our hearts.”

Bello’s music catalogue remains a treasure trove of joy and cultural pride. Classics such as Awa Ti Danfo, Ariya Ti De, Ijo Olomo, Fellow Nigerians, and Victory continue to resonate across generations.

In 1979, his artistry even carried him to London, where he recorded Ahuja in London and famously struck up a friendship with reggae legend, Bob Marley.

Although his career was slowed by a tragic accident in 1982, Bello’s influence never dimmed. He remained a respected figure and a symbol of resilience, with his music serving as a soundtrack for countless celebrations and moments of cultural pride.

As fans and fellow musicians remember him, it is not with sorrow but with gratitude for a life that inspired joy, dance, and unity.
