The Nigerian Army has said the explosion and fire outbreak which occurred on Thursday at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has been brought under control.
According to a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, the incident occurred in the early hours of August 14, 2025, within one of the storage buildings of the 42nd Engineers Brigade Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
She said the explosion led to a limited fire outbreak, which was contained through the combined efforts of troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.
The statement read, “The Nigerian Army wishes to confirm that a minor explosion and subsequent fire outbreak occurred earlier today at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode.
“Specifically, in the early hours of today, 14 August 2025, a localized explosion occurred within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron leading to a limited fire outbreak. Swift intervention by troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working closely with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured that the fire was quickly contained.”
Anele said no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained during the incident.
“Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials,” the statement noted.
She added that a detailed assessment was ongoing to determine the extent of material loss, while urging residents of Ilese and adjoining communities to remain calm and go about their normal activities.
