Tensions have flared in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State, following a deadly attack on Gyaruwa community by suspected herdsmen, which left five people dead on Tuesday night.
Following the killing, enraged youths staged a violent protest in Naka, setting the Gwer West Local Government Secretariat ablaze.
They also torched a hotel owned by Senator Titus Zam, who represents Benue North West Senatorial District.
The palace of the Gwer West monarch, Chief Daniel Abomtse, was also targeted, with some vehicles set on fire.
Security forces were deployed to restore order, but reports indicate that soldiers shot three protesters, who are now receiving treatment in the hospital.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Kate Aneene, confirmed the unrest and stated that the Benue State Commissioner of Police was en route to Naka with a tactical team to address the situation.
